slapping Chris Rock at the left the audience and viewers at home in a state of shock.

But it’s not the first time that the movie star has been antagonized by the comedian.

In fact, a feud has been brewing between the pair over the past five years thanks to repeated jokes made at Will’s expense.

When hosting the Oscars back in 2016, Chris got himself into trouble with the actor when he used Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith as joke material in his opening monologue.

Will Smith and Chris Rock’s beef explained: Comedian first made joke about actor’s wife Jada in 2016 Oscars and jibed him over exes

In an opening bit about diversity, Chris, 57, poked fun at Jada, 50, who he has worked with in the animated movie franchise Madagascar, for boycotting the Oscars when Will failed to receive a nomination for the movie Concussion.

‘Jada got mad, said she’s not coming.Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited,’ Chris said.

‘You get mad. It’s not fair that Will was this good and didn’t get nominated. It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West.’

‘This year at the Oscars, things are going to be a little different. In the ‘in memoriam’ package it’s just going to be black people who were shot by the cops on their way to the movies. Yes, I said it, all right?’

Stunned: Will Smith punching Chris Rock at the Oscars left the audience and viewers at home in a state of shock

Following the dig, TMZ had approached Will for comment but he remain silent and refused to answer.

But the jibes from Chris didn’t stop there.

Adding further fire to their beef, in 2018 Chris posted a controversial comment about the actor on social media that made light of his previous marriage.

Will had posted a photo wishing his ex-wife Sheree Zampino a very happy birthday, and Chris posted a remark that went viral.

First jab: In his 2016 opening monologue about diversity, Chris, 57, poked fun at Jada, 50, for boycotting the Oscars when Will failed to receive a nomination for Concussion (Pic; 2016)

‘Happy Bday, @shereezampino.#BestBabyMamaEver! 🙂 I Love You, Ree-Ree,’ Will wrote alongside a photo of Sheree and their son Trey.

Chris then commented: ‘Wow. You have a very understanding wife.’

Sheree then responded to Chris, replying: ‘Don’t hate.’

The exchange hit headlines at the time, considering Chris had targeted Jada and Will during the Oscars in 2016.

However, on Sunday night, it seemed Will had finally enough after Chris made a ‘G.I.Jane’ joke about Jada’s shaven head haircut.

History: Chris previously made fun of Jada when he hosted the Oscars in 2016

Jada has been open about her struggle with hair loss due to alopecia. In December she posted a video where she pointed out a patch of baldness.

‘Now at this point, I can only laugh. Y’all know I’ve been struggling with alopecia and just all of a sudden one day, look at this line right here,’ she said in the Instagram clip.

‘Now this is going to be a little bit more difficult for me to hide, so I thought I’d just share it so y’all not asking any questions — but you know, mama’s going to put some rhinestones in there, and I’m going to make me a little crown.’

Jada captioned the social media upload, ‘Mama’s gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something.Me and this alopecia are going to be friends … period!’

Shortly after the shocking moment on Sunday, a source told Us Weekly that Chris rehearsed his speech with no mention of Jada. The insider added, ‘Will was not in attendance for [the] rehearsal.’

During Sunday’s Oscars, Will, visibly emotional, walked back to his seat after slapping Chris and shouted: ‘Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.’

After the incident, Will and Jada reportedly held hands throughout the ceremony.

The couple’s open relationship has seemingly been a trigger for Will, having sparked chaotic conversation at various star-studded events and caused the actor to insist ‘never been infidelity’ in their marriage.

Most recently, the couple found themselves the butt of a joke earlier this month after Smith scooped Best Actor for his role in King Richard at the 75th Annual British Academy Film Awards.

United: After the incident, Will and Jada reportedly held hands throughout the ceremony and kissed when Will’s name was announced as Best Actor winner

BAFTAs host Rebel Wilson, 41, quipped on stage: ‘I thought his best performance over the past year was being OK with all his wife’s boyfriends!’

Speaking afterwards, Smith insisted that there has ‘never been infidelity’, despite Jada admitting in 2020 that she had an ‘entanglement’ with singer August Alsina, 29.

‘There’s never been infidelity in our marriage.Jada and I talk about everything, and we have never surprised one another with anything ever,’ Smith said.

The actor – who has son Jaden, 23, and daughter Willow, 21, with Jada – added that he doesn’t care if people speculate about his marriage and instead he encourages the ‘chatter’ in the hope it will spark meaningful debate.

‘I have decided that chatter about my life can be of a benefit to people,’ he told Gayle King on CBS Sunday Morning after the BAFTAs.

‘Chatter is the first stage to having a real conversation and to be able to truly explore if some of the things in your heart are loving or poisonous.’

‘That’s pure out of control rage and violence’: Hollywood stars condemn Will Smith as Twitter erupts over THAT shocking Chris Rock slap during live Academy Awards ceremony

left Oscar viewers stunned and speechless on Sunday night after he slapped Chris Rock following an off-color joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss, which is due to alopecia.

Hollywood stars quickly took to Twitter to call out Smith’s shocking attack, with comedian and director Judd Apatow calling the display ‘pure out of control rage and violence’ and claiming that Smith ‘could have killed’ Rock.

‘Seems like Will Smith’s plan to get comedian and the world to not make jokes about him is not going to pan out.The Williams family must be furious. Pure narcissism,’ he wrote.

Who saw that coming?!Hollywood stars spoke out against Will Smith on Sunday night after he slapped Chris Rock following an off-color joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss

‘Also — GI Jane was gorgeous. What exactly is insulting about being compared to a ripped, stunning Demi?’ he wrote, referencing the Ridley Scott-directed Demi Moore-starring film.

Apatow strongly rejected a Twitter user who said they ‘understood’ why Smith hit Rock because of Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia.

‘He could have killed him. That’s pure out of control rage and violence. They’ve heard a million jokes about them in the last three decades. They are not freshman in the world of Hollywood and comedy. He lost his mind,’ he wrote.

Rock, 57, appeared to have set off Smith — who is nominated for Best Actor for his performance in King Richard — by joking that the Matrix Resurrections actress was preparing to star in a sequel to G.I.Jane, a reference to her bald head.

‘Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth,’ Smith shouted cheap flights from bwi to tucson the audience after returning to his seat near the stage.

Not having it: Judd Apatow didn’t have much sympathy for Smith’s behavior

Kathy Griffin agreed with Apatow and called out Smith.

She wasn’t having any of the rationalizations and defenses for his conduct, and she worried that his attack would embolden hecklers that regularly interrupt comedy shows.

‘Let me tell you something, it’s a very bad practice to walk up on stage and physically assault a Comedian.

Now we all have to worry about who wants to be the next Will Smith in comedy clubs and theaters.’

Rob Reiner wrote that there was ‘no excuse’ for what Smith did and called the apparent justifications in his acceptance speech ‘bulls***.’

‘Will Smith owes Chris Rock a huge apology. There is no excuse for what he did. He’s lucky Chris is not filing assault charges. The excuses he made tonight were bulls***.’

The Academy alluded to Smith’s slap without explicitly mentioning it in a statement posted to Twitter.

‘The Academy does not condone violence of any form.

Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Award winners, who deserve this moment in recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.’

Will and Jada’s son Jaden Smith didn’t reference the slap in his Twitter post, but he didn’t speak out against it, tweeting, ‘And That’s How We Do It.’

Later, he included a photo of himself in a car wearing sunglasses and noted that his father’s acceptance speech made him emotional.

‘My Dads Speech Made Me Cry,’ he wrote.

Serena Williams, whose early years are documented in the inspiring drama, appeared to react to Smith attacking Rock in a short video posted to her Instagram Stories.

One brief clip showed her off the main floor with her moth hanging open and her eyes wide in shock.

‘I just sat down ‘cause I was like, ‘I’ve gotta get a drink now,” she said in a follow-up video posted from inside the theater, though she didn’t explicitly address the apparent assault.

No ‘love’:Maria Shriver didn’t mince words in calling out Smith.’#WillSmith says he wants to be a vessel for love. Love is not violent. Love is not what was displayed on a global stage tonight,’ she tweeted

Will and Jada joined together for some playful posts before the ceremony, but they seemed to capture the actor’s mood even before his brutal outburst.

‘Me ‘n @jadapinkettsmith got all dressed up to choose chaos,’ he captioned a short Instagram video.

The two looked sweet as they stood together for a photo, but he layered narration from another source over the clip.

‘Good morning, everyone.

God has let me live another day and I am about to make it everyone’s problem,’ the voice said.

Then the video cut to a variety of photos of the two mugging with snarling faces.

Wagging her finger: Mandy Moore seemed to reference the attack with a tweet she reposted to her Instagram Stories, which appeared to urge viewers not to salute the actor’s ‘violence’

Speaking out: She followed it up by reposting a second comment: ”Love will make you do some crazy things’ is true toxic bulls*** and I hope no children watching this learn a thing from him’

‘Violence is never ‘proof of love,” wrote Glennon Doyle.’That’s a deadly idea that has fueled and excused domestic (and all) violence for far too long. think hard about that take, please.’

She followed it up by reposting a second comment: ”Love will make you do some crazy things’ is true toxic bulls*** and I hope no children watching this learn a thing from him.’

Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s wife Peta Murgatroyd understood Smith wanting to stand up for his wife, but she said there ‘were other ways to handle this.’

‘I gotta say…unless this was staged (it didn’t look like it) …there were other ways to handle this.My god This is WILD!!!! It ruined the rest of the show, and now the only thing people will remember about these Oscars is this altercation.

‘On the flip side, I am all for Will Smith standing up for his wife. I think the reason is VALID, however this was not it.’

She clarified in a follow-up post that even though Rock’s joke was a ‘low blow,’ but what Smith did ‘was assault,’ and she thought he should have been ‘escorted out’ after the fight.

‘I dunno, this just jolted me every time I watched it back.It just made me so uncomfortable. Maybe it’s because there is so much violence in the world right now. This is just not what we all needed to see,’ she wrote.

D.L. Hughley referenced his recent feud with Kanye West in a series of tweets about the incident.

‘We should never get to a place where we sit and watch a movie start hit someone on global television then, moments later, get a standing ovation while talking about love,’ she added.

Warren Beatty and Annette Bening’s daughter Isabel Beatty referenced her father’s mixup at the 2017 Oscars, when he accidentally announced La La Land as the Best Picture winner, instead of the actual winner, Moonlight.

‘Yes this is more unhinged than my dads moment, no debate,’ she tweeted.
